Mary Want lived in Hamstreet for nearly 40 years and painted the scenes of Romney Marsh and the landscapes of Kent. A highly talented artist, she was a friend to many and was respected and loved. Her husband, Peter, was a Methodist minister and the both played a central role in the community.
Mary's flowers can be picked from the page, her birds take flight and her sheep graze peacefully under the wide skies of Romney Marsh. There are few artists who have so fully captured both the sights of the area and the hearts of those who live there, and this website is intended as a tribute to her, the county she loved, and her lifelong passion.
